One may think that jeans were born in the US. However, Genoa in Italy is in fact the city where the original blue denim comes from. Back in the 15th century, bleu de Gênes was a fabric used for sail making around the ancient harbour of Genoa. Later, this strong, durable and low-cost cotton fabric was produced in the French city of Nîmes, resulting in the name denim – de Nîmes. Similar textiles were dyed blue with indigo, traded from India in the harbour of Genoa, before making it across the Atlantic, four centuries later.
